  • 6 features/properties of Windows Admin Center

    - Locally-deployed admin tool, not cloud bases. (is installed and runs from a server or workstation).
    - Single-server or single-cluster management capabilities.
    - A rethinking and reskin of the older Server Manager console.
    - Works in a browser (but not all different browsers).
    - Does not require a installed agent on client servers.
    - Several 2019 features are preferred or can only be managed with WAC.
  • Locally Deployed, 2 deployment methods

Run WAC on in-house computers, it is possible to run it on Azure VMs in the cloud.

    2 general deployment strategies:
    - Run on a management Workstation (Windows 10).
    - Run on a server as a "gateway".
  • When would you want to use WAC (Windows Admin Center)

When you want to do one thing on one server or cluster that is not policy driven.

It is an interactive tool build on PowerShell, not a tool meant for batch operations.
  • Which browser are supported for use with WAC

    All chrome based browsers:
    - Google Chrome.
    - The "new", chrome bases, Edge.
  • Why does WAC not require an dedicated agent

It uses the WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) that is already part of the Windows OS to manage and provide information about a system.

It does however need WinRM to be enabled on the client server. This can be done by setting the WinRM service to "autostart".
  • How to obtain WAC (Windows Admin Center)

It is a free download as long as you have a Windows Server or Windows 10 license.
  • 1.2 WAC vs. Server Manager

  • Why would you prefer WAC over Server Manager (4)

    - It is browser based and does not require the installation of additional software (RSAT on Windows 10).
    - Some of the management tools have been updates.
    - Some tools are simply not present in Server Manager.
    - The WAC gateway can be a usefull feature for larger organisations.
  • Why would you prefer Server Manager over WAC (5)

    - WAC can be substantially slower.
    - The WAC user interface is less compact.
    - The WAC code is not yet as polished, it contains more bugs and "quirks".

    - WAC is not as informative, it provides less information and some of the provided information can be cryptic.
    - Microsoft only provides support for WAC if it is updated within 30 days of an update being available.
  • 1.3 WAC and Powershell

  • How to view the PowerShell scripts that WAC uses

When a specific WAC tool is selected you can click in the top right corner on the >_ button to view the different scripts associated with the current tool.
  • How to get to PowerShell via WAC (3)

    - Select the server of interest.
    - Under "tools" click on PowerShell.
    - A built-in PowerShell console appears, that will automatically log in using your credentials.
