  • 1.2.1 The Soldier

  • Why does this poem fit the literature timeperiod?
Firstly, the title is soldier -> war -> great war poetry
Secondly, this poem is kind of a goodbye letter. This is probably written by a soldier, who thought that he might die.
  • Explain "some corner of a foreign field".
It probably a place where the soldier is fighting, not home, so a foreign country.

    Walking like zombies
  • There is a change in ‘tempo’ when the second stanza starts. How is that achieved? Why is this change necessary?
It is achieved by the exclamation marks, the short words with open vowels (Gas!), and the emotions it provokes, people need to make haste to put on their gas masks, otherwise they will die...
  • How does the poet “use” the final stanza to arrive at the conclusion of the “old Lie”?
The image the final stanza gives you is one of utter dismay, despair, filth, dirt etc, etc; no glory, no sweetness, no nothing, no way it is “dulce et decorum etc…”
