  • When was war declared on Germany by the French and English?
    On September 3rd,  1939
  • Why did they declare war on Germany?
    31-8-1939. Germain radio news mentioned that Polish soldiers had killed a number of Germans and that they had destoyed the broadcasting station. A few hours later the German army invaded Poland. Hilter blamed Poland and he was lying.
  • Why was Hitler lying?
    The night before, some S members had put on Polish uniorms and had let some concentration camp prisoners near the radio station and murdered them with deadly injetions.
  • What has Hitler written in Mein Kampf?
    That he would have Germany rule over Europe. He would found the Third Empire that would exist for t thousands of years'. In a 'war of races'he would destroy the Soviet Union and conquer lebensraum for the Germanic race that would reach behind the Urals.
  • What did he do after he took power in 1933 and in 1936?
    H immediately started largescale re-rearmament. Tewo years later, he started building up a fleet and air force and introduced general conscription. In 1936, he sent troops to the Ruhr area.
  • All of this was against the Treaty of Versailles but France and Great Britain did nothing, why?
    - French did not dare to act on their own
    - British were too busy with their colonialemire and the economic crisis
    - They found 'Versailles' too harsh and many were satisfied with Hitler.
    - They found fine that Hitler fought communism
  • What did Hitler do in 1936?
    He made an alliance with Mussolini: the RomeBerlin axis. Hitler also became an ally of Japan.
  • What did Hitler mean by heim ins reich? How did he do so?
    - He wanted to unite all Germans in a German empire.
    - He blackmailed Austria in 1938, made an Austrian nazi the government leader and Austria became German leader.
    (the west did nothing)
  • Hitler was encouraged by the West doing nothing, so what happened with Sudetenland?
    - demanded Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia (which was the only democracy in Central Europe and an ally of France)
    -France and Britain seemd to be willing to defend the country
    - In September 1938 they gave in (it looked like diplomacy had won)
  • How did it became clear that appeasement didn't work?
    A few months later, nai Germany occupied the rest of Czechia and Slovakia became a German vassal state.
